"He Was Never Stopped" β The Clottey Story Retold
New generations of Ghanaian boxing fans are rediscovering the master of the high guard β a stylistic throwback who stood in front of the sport's hardest punchers and never fell.

Accra, Ghana π¬π Β· IBF World Champion
From the boxing gyms of Accra to the bright lights of Madison Square Garden and Cowboys Stadium β the story of a champion who was never once knocked out in 47 professional fights.
The Story

Joshua Clottey β "The Grand Master" β was born on October 6, 1977 in Accra, Ghana. He played football as a youth like his father before taking up boxing alongside his two brothers, Emmanuel and Judas, who also turned professional.
He won his first 20 professional fights (14 by knockout), captured the African Boxing Union welterweight title, and on August 2, 2008 defeated Zab Judah to become IBF Welterweight Champion of the World β Ghana's proudest boxing night in years.
By The Numbers
The complete statistical picture of a 24-year professional journey across four continents.
The Journey
Wins his first professional fight on March 31, 1995 at Kaneshie Sports Complex. The 20-fight win streak that follows β 14 by knockout β announces a new force from Ghana.
At 20β0, Clottey challenges Carlos Baldomir for the WBC International title in London. He is winning the fight until a disputed disqualification for head clashes β a decision many ringside observers called dubious.
Challenges WBO champion Antonio Margarito in Atlantic City and breaks his hand in round four β yet fights on to a razor-close decision loss. Years later, Margarito was found to have used loaded hand wraps.
Wins a unanimous decision over the legendary Diego Corrales β a victory that took on deeper meaning when Corrales tragically passed away months later. Clottey then beats Shamone Alvarez to secure another title eliminator.
August 2, 2008 β the coronation. Clottey defeats former two-division champion Zab Judah over twelve rounds at the Pearl Concert Theater to claim the vacant IBF Welterweight title. Ghana has a new world champion.
June 13, 2009 at Madison Square Garden: a memorable back-and-forth war with Miguel Cotto for the WBO title. Clottey survives a round-one knockdown and cuts Cotto β but drops a hotly disputed split decision many believed he won.
March 13, 2010: before a roaring crowd of over 50,000 at the home of the Dallas Cowboys, Clottey faces seven-division king Manny Pacquiao. He hears the final bell against the sport's pound-for-pound best. The fight sells 700,000 PPV buys on HBO.
In front of Anthony Mundine's home crowd in Newcastle, Australia, Clottey turns in arguably his finest performance β dropping the former world champion five times to capture the WBA International super welterweight title.
Clottey closes his career where his heart always was β Ghana. A TKO win over Aziz Mponda in Akropong seals the ledger at 41β5β1 NC with 24 knockouts. Never stopped. Never knocked out. The Grand Master rides into history.
